Two days after suffering a broken arm, Cleveland Indians right-hander Corey Kluber has been placed on the 10-day injured list.
The Indians recalled right-hander Jon Edwards from Triple-A Columbus in a corresponding move.
Kluber, a two-time American League Cy Young Award winner, sustained a non-displaced fracture to his pitching forearm when struck by a comebacker Wednesday night in Miami.
Kluber left the game with two outs in the fifth inning after he was hit by a line drive from Miami Marlins right fielder Brian Anderson that was clocked at 102 mph.
The team initially said Kluber (2-3) had a contusion. An X-ray found the fracture, and the team announced that Kluber would be re-evaluated in Cleveland on Thursday.
Thursday’s examination at the Cleveland Clinic confirmed the injury and surgery was ruled determined to be unnecessary. He’ll be re-evaluated in three-to-four weeks.
The 33-year-old veteran allowed eight hits and three runs in 4 2/3 inning during the Indians’ 4-2 loss.
Kluber was an All-Star in each of the past three seasons, but he has a disappointing 5.80 ERA this year.
In nine major league seasons, Kluber has a 98-58 record with a 3.16 ERA in 208 games (203 starts). He was the AL Cy Young Award winner in 2014 (18-9, 2.44 ERA) and 2017 (18-4, 2.25 ERA), and he finished third in the voting last year after going 20-7 with a 2.89 ERA.
He helped pitched the Indians to the 2016 World Series, going 4-1 with a 1.83 ERA in the postseason that year.
