Police in Norfolk, Va., have arrested a 20-year-old man and charged him with second-degree murder in the death of College of William & Mary running back Nate Evans.
Kri’Shawn D. Beamon, 20, of Chesapeake Va., was arrested in connection with the death of Evans, the Norfolk Police Department announced Tuesday. Beamon was arrested Monday at his residence without incident, according to police.
Beamon was also charged with robbery and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony, police said.
The 19-year-old Evans and Beamon reportedly got into a confrontation last Thursday night near the campus of Old Dominion in Norfolk. Officers responded around 11:50 p.m. and found Evans on the sidewalk suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene a short time later.
Beamon is being held in the Norfolk City Jail without bond.
Evans rushed for 684 yards and five touchdowns and caught 30 passes for 208 yards in two seasons for William & Mary.
He rushed for 476 yards as a freshman before his total dropped to 208 last season.
On Monday night, Evans was remembered by more than 1,500 people inside Kaplan Arena on the William & Mary campus.
“You inspired so much happiness, joy and lightheartedness,” sophomore defensive end Carl Fowler, a close friend, said while speaking to the memory of Evans at the ceremony. “You will live on as that person in our hearts because that’s who you really were.”
