Angels center fielder Mike Trout left Los Angeles’ home game Tuesday against the Milwaukee Brewers after the third inning because of a right groin strain.
The team subsequently announced that Trout is day-to-day and manager Brad Ausmus said it is “more than likely” that Trout will be held out of Wednesday’s series finale.
“The trainer … saw him stretching out his groin in the outfield, and so the discussion started then,” Ausmus told the media following his team’s 11-8 win over the Brewers. “Trouty wanted to stay in the game. He felt like it was just a little bit of soreness from his workout he had had either earlier today or yesterday.”
The two-time American League Most Valuable Player went 2-for-2 with two singles before leaving the game.
“We can’t lose that guy for any length of time,” Ausmus said. “It was really my call. He lobbied to stay in and I just said I can’t take the chance.”
Trout, 27, has reached base via hit or walk in all 12 games he has played this season. He had five home runs in a four-game span from Thursday through Sunday, and he is batting .406 this season.
