The New York Mets activated catcher Travis d’Arnaud on Sunday, just less than a year after he underwent Tommy John surgery.
The team optioned catcher Tomas Nido to Triple-A Syracuse in a corresponding move.
d’Arnaud, who signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal in the offseason, played in just four games last season before sustaining a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing arm. He underwent Tommy John surgery on April 17.
Wilson Ramos was signed to be New York’s starting catcher. d’Arnaud, 30, will be his backup and is eligible to come off the bench during Sunday’s game against the Washington Nationals.
D’Arnaud has a .245 average with 47 homers and 162 RBIs in 397 games over parts of six seasons. He was 3-for-15 with one homer and three RBIs last season before the injury.
