As he conducted his first postgame interview after a win, new Baltimore Orioles manager Brandon Hyde was dripping in substances ranging from beer to syrup.
The Orioles get a chance to get their second win under Hyde on Sunday afternoon when they conclude a three-game series with the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.
The Orioles dropped the first game under Hyde — 7-2 on Thursday — but then held on for a 5-3 victory Saturday.
“I’m dripping right now and who knows what that is,” Hyde said. “I got a shower full of all kinds of things in the bathroom. I got thrown in the laundry basket and then got showered with all kinds of stuff. A shower is needed but it felt great.”
The celebration started for Hyde after catcher Jesus Sucre tied career highs with three RBIs and three hits, and Mike Wright struck out Miguel Andujar to record his first save.
“He may have some syrup on him at some point, I don’t know who did that,” Wright said while drawing some laughs. “It was me. Most of it got on his son but it was fun.”
Despite their struggles since the start of last season, the Orioles have played well at Yankee Stadium of late. They are 6-5 in their last 11 games in New York, with each win coming in extra innings or by three runs or less.
The Yankees will be hoping to rebound after committing three errors and stranding 11. They left the bases loaded in the first inning and stranded multiple runners in the fourth, sixth and ninth.
DJ LeMahieu and Luke Voit had RBI singles while Troy Tulowitzki hit his first homer since July 8, 2017.
“Those guys never feel like they’re out of it and rightfully so,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after his team scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth. “We had opportunities. We just couldn’t cash in enough today, but we had opportunities.”
J.A. Happ will make his season debut for the Yankees, attempting to remain unbeaten with New York.
Since being acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays on July 26, Happ is 7-0 with a 2.69 ERA in 11 regular-season starts. He is attempting to join Joe Cowley (July 16, 1984-April 23, 1985) as the second Yankee to go undefeated in his first 12 starts.
Happ also is 7-0 with a 2.76 ERA in his past 11 starts at Yankee Stadium since the start of the 2014 season. He is 8-1 with a 3.39 ERA in 15 career starts in New York, including a 4-0 mark in seven home starts with the Yankees.
Happ went 2-0 with a 7.94 ERA in four spring training appearances. He also tuned up for his first full season as a Yankee by pitching in a simulated game and throwing 5 1/3 innings in a minor league game.
The left-hander is 7-6 with a 2.97 ERA in 20 appearances (19 starts) against Baltimore. He has allowed three runs or fewer in 10 straight starts against the Orioles, who last season batted .196 (21-for-107) in five appearances against him.
Dylan Bundy will start for Baltimore and hopes to start rebounding from a rough 2018, when he led the American League with 16 losses and posted career highs with a 5.45 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP. Bundy struggled in spring training by posting a 7.89 ERA in six starts.
Bundy ended last year by going 1-7 with a 7.35 ERA in his last 10 starts, a stretch in which he allowed 15 of his career-high 41 home runs, the worst total in the American League.
Bundy is 2-5 with a 6.18 ERA in nine career appearances (seven starts) against the Yankees.
