Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera departed Saturday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays after being hit on the right hand by a pitch in the sixth inning.
The Tigers said X-rays were negative and that the injury was a contusion.
Cabrera, 35, was plunked by Blue Jays right-hander Aaron Sanchez while leading off the sixth. He stood around home plate before eventually heading to first base and then leaving the field after having a discussion with Detroit manager Ron Gardenhire.
Toronto won 3-0.
Cabrera, a two-time American League MVP, played in just 38 games last season due to a torn bicep. He batted .299 with three homers and 22 RBIs.
