The Pittsburgh Pirates placed ace Gerrit Cole on the 15-day disabled list and recalled left-hander Steven Brault from Triple-A Indianapolis to start Monday’s road game against the Chicago Cubs.

Cole, who owns a 7-9 mark with a 3.55 ERA this season, is being plagued by posterior inflammation of the right elbow. The trip to the disabled list was made retroactive to Aug. 25.

The 25-year-old Cole has struggled mightily this month, posting a 6.08 ERA in five starts. He allowed five runs on seven hits in five innings in a 5-4 setback to Houston on Wednesday in his last outing.

Brault owns an 0-1 mark with a 3.60 ERA in two appearances with the Pirates this season. The 24-year-old is 2-7 with a 3.91 ERA in 16 games with Indianapolis in 2016.
