Outside linebacker Aldon Smith signed a two-year, $11 million deal with the Oakland Raiders.
Pro Bowl free safety Reggie Nelson also agreed to a deal with the Raiders on Tuesday pending a physical.
Smith is suspended until mid-November and is not eligible to apply for reinstatement until the second week of the 2016 regular season. At that point, the NFL will weigh the merit of allowing Smith back on the field.
The contract is loaded with incentives. The 26-year-old can make an additional $8.5 million over the course of the deal.
Nelson, 32, was a first-round draft pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars and developed into an impact player after being traded to the Cincinnati Bengals.
Nelson will replace Charles Woodson, who retired in January, at free safety in the rebuilt Raiders’ defense. Previously the Raiders signed linebacker Bruce Irvin away from the Seattle Seahawks and landed cornerback Sean Smith, an unrestricted free agent who played the past three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Smith spent the 2015 season with Oakland after being released by San Francisco and compiled 28 tackles and 3.5 sacks in nine games.
In September, he pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor counts of hit-and-run, drunken driving and vandalism, charges that stemmed from an incident on Aug. 6.
He was suspended for a year on Nov. 17.
Smith will be eligible to apply for reinstatement 60 days before the one-year anniversary of the suspension.
Smith spent his first four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers where he recorded 43 sacks in 42 games.
While with the 49ers, Smith had multiple run-ins with law enforcement and was arrested four times. San Francisco finally released last year after his DUI and hit-and-run arrest in August.
