A’s Gray scratched from start due to food poisoning

OAKLAND, Calif. — A’s right-hander Sonny Gray was scratched from his scheduled Opening Day start Monday because of food poisoning, missing Oakland’s game against the Chicago White Sox.

Left-hander Rich Hill started in his place, making his first career Opening Day start.

Gray spent a few hours at a hospital emergency room Monday morning, receiving intravenous fluids and anti-vomiting medication, A’s trainer Nick Paparesta said.

“I think there’s an outside chance he’s ready to pitch (Tuesday),” Paparesta added.

Gray, 26, was an All-Star last year, and he finished third in American League Cy Young award voting after going 14-7 with a 2.73 ERA.
