Spring Scores: Homers power Orioles past Pirates

Mark Trumbo hit a two-run homer, J.J. Hardy and Jonathan Schoop also homered and Joey Rickhard drove in the winning run in the ninth-inning single with a single in the Baltimore Orioles’ 6-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday in Sarasota, Fla.

Trumbo and Schoop connected against Pirates starter Jonathon Niese and Hardy off Jorge Rondon. Niese gave up four runs and six hits in six innings and Matt Joyce also homered.

Red Sox 4, Mets 1

David Ortiz singled in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and Joe Kelly pitched seven innings for Boston against a New York split squad in Fort Myers, Fla. Kelly gave up one run, five hits and one walk and Xander Bogaerts had a homer and sacrifice fly for the Red Sox.

Blue Jays 6, Tigers 4

Justin Smoak homered for the fourth time in spring training and Toronto overcame a rough outing by knuckleballer R.A. Dickey to beat Detroit in Dunedin, Fla. Dickey gave up four runs and eight hits in five innings, including RBI singles by James McCall and Jose Iglesias and a home run by Nick Castellanos.

Nationals 8, Cardinals 2

Michael A. Taylor drove in four runs with a double and homer, Anthony Rendon had a two-run double and Max Scherzer won a duel with Adam Wainwright for Washington against St. Louis in Viera, Fla. Scherzer had nine strikeouts and gave up two unearned runs in five innings, and Wainwright yielded four runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Marlins 8, Twins 4

Oswaldo Arcia hit a two-run homer in a four-run eighth inning to help Miami beat Minnesota in Jupiter, Fla. Arcia had another homer and Giancarlo Stanton homered for the second straight day for the Marlins.

Astros 8, Mets 5

A.J. Reed scored on an inside-the-park homer for Houston in the second inning when New York center fielder Yoenis Cespedes thought the ball was lost under the padding on the wall in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Dallas Keuchel threw five scoreless innings for the Astros and Mets starter Matt Harvey was shelled for six runs, seven hits and four walks in three innings.

Rangers 12, Reds 5

John Ruggiano hit two two-run homers and Chi Chi Gonzalez pitched five scoreless innings as a Texas split squad routed Cincinnati in Surprise, Ariz. Adrian Beltre, Mitch Moreland and Ronald Guzman added home runs for the Rangers, who hit four homers and scored eight times in 5 2/3 innings against Reds starter Anthony DeSciafani.
