Cap-strapped Baltimore released leading tackler Daryl Smith, the inside linebacker credited with helping the Ravens transition following Ray Lewis’ retirement.
Smith, 33, was scheduled to count $3.5 million against the cap in 2016. He led the team in tackles last season but shared snaps with Zachary Orr in December.
Smith, who played for the Jacksonville Jaguars before signing with the Ravens in 2013, had 120-plus tackles in each of his three seasons in Baltimore.
The Ravens aren’t likely done cutting veteran players because of their limited salary cap space.
Left tackle Eugene Monroe and tight end Dennis Pitta are two candidates to be released.
