The San Francisco 49ers re-signed running back Shaun Draughn to a one-year contract Wednesday.

Draughn, 28, was scheduled to become a free agent on March 9.

Draughn was signed last season by the 49ers after Carlos Hyde suffered a stress fracture in his left foot.

“Shaun did a heck of a job for us last year despite joining the team in the middle of the season,” 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement. “He certainly earned the respect of everyone in our organization for the way he handled himself, both on and off the field, and we are excited to have him back.”

The 5-foot-11, 205-pound Draughn signed with the 49ers as a free agent on Nov. 2. He started six games for the team and registered career highs in rushes (76), rushing yards (263), receptions (25) and receiving yards (175), prior to being placed on the injured reserve list with a knee injury.

Draughn also saw action in five games with the Cleveland Browns in 2015 before being waived by the team on Oct. 20.

Draughn has appeared in 41 career games (six starts) and registered 151 carries for 527 yards and three touchdowns. He originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Washington Redskins in 2011.

Throughout his five-year career, Draughn has spent time with Washington (2011), Kansas City (2011-12), Baltimore (2013) and Indianapolis (2013). In 2014, he appeared in two games with the Chicago Bears, four games with the San Diego Chargers and four games with the Browns.
