
Shortstop Darwin Barney delivered all five RBIs to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to a 5-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in the exhibition opener for both teams on Tuesday in Clearwater, Fla. Barney went 3-for-3 with two doubles and Blue Jays starter Marcus Stroman pitched a flawless first inning before giving up two runs in the second. Designated hitter J.P. Arencibia, a former Toronto catcher, homered for Philadelphia.
Reds 6, Indians 5
Third baseman Eugenio Suarez had two doubles and two RBIs, first baseman Joey Votto went 2-for-2 and Scott Schebler homered in the sixth inning for the Cincinnati Reds in a exhibition opener against the Cleveland Indians in Goodyear, Ariz. First baseman Carlos Santana and shortstop Eric Stamets homered for the Indians.
Pirates 4, Tigers 2
Pittsburgh catcher Francisco Cervelli blasted a home run in the first inning, shortstop Jordy Mercer also homered and the Pirates went on to beat the Detroit Tigers in an exhibition opener in Lakeland, Fla. Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning that tied the score before Pittsburgh second baseman Alen Hanson blooped a single in the seventh to restore the Pirates’ lead.
Orioles 4, Braves 4 (10 innings)
Second baseman Ryan Flaherty and first baseman Christian Walker homered in the third inning for the Baltimore Orioles against the Atlanta Braves in an exhibition opener for both teams that ended in a tie after 10 innings in Kissimmee, Fla. Flaherty led off the inning with a homer and Walker hit a two-run blast to give the Orioles a 4-0 lead before the Braves came back in the eighth to tie the score.
Marlins 5, University of Miami 1
Left fielder Christian Yelich went 2-for-2 and second baseman Robert Andino also had two hits and two RBIs to help the Miami Marlins defeat the Miami Hurricanes in an exhibition game after the college team opened a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
