Right-hander Matt Harvey has not ruled out a long-term extension with the New York Mets.
Harvey, who avoided arbitration with the Mets last month by agreeing to a one-year, $4.325 million deal, arrived at spring training camp in Port St. Lucie, Fla., on Monday a few days before the start of workouts.
Harvey isn’t eligible for free agency until after the 2018 season and general manager Sandy Alderson has indicated extension talks could come up during spring training if mutual interest existed.
Harvey, who turns 27 next month, made $614,125 in 2015 when he went 13-8 with a 2.71 ERA over 189 1/3 innings in 29 starts — his first season back from Tommy John surgery.
Harvey, who helped the Mets reach the World Series, was 2-0 with a 3.04 ERA over 26 2/3 innings in four starts in the postseason.
—St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina no longer has a cast on his injured left thumb and has set Opening Day as the goal for his return.
“That’s my goal, obviously,” Molina told reporters after a workout in Jupiter, Fla. “We’ll have to wait and see, but I’m going to try to do my best to be in the Opening Day lineup.”
Molina tore ligaments in the thumb when he applied a tag to Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo on Sept. 20. He continued to play until the Cardinals were eliminated in the postseason and then underwent surgery.
The thumb didn’t heal properly and that prompted a second surgery in December.
—The Texas Rangers and first baseman Ike Davis agreed to a minor-league contract on Monday.
Davis, who turns 29 next month, will report to spring training with the major leaguers and be given an opportunity to make the squad.
Davis dealt with injuries last season and hit just three homers in 74 games with the Oakland Athletics. He missed a month with a quadriceps injury and underwent season-ending hip surgery in August.
Davis has a career batting average of .229 with 81 homers in six big-league seasons. He has played with the New York Mets and Pittsburgh in addition to Oakland.
