MLB notebook: Indians sign Tomlin to extension

The Cleveland Indians signed right-hander Josh Tomlin on Tuesday to a two-year contract extension with a club option for the 2018 season.

Tomlin’s salary will be $2.25 million in 2016, which was decided two weeks ago before arbitration, and $2.5 million in 2017, Cleveland.com reported. The option years is worth $3 million and includes a $750,000 buyout. With performance bonuses, the total value could reach nearly $12 million for three years.

Tomlin came back from shoulder surgery in march to post a 7-2 record with a 3.02 ERA in 10 starts for the Indians last season. He finished strong with a 3-1 record and a 3.00 ERA in five September starts that included two complete games.

The 31-year-old has a major league record of 36-30 with a 4.65 ERA in 95 games, including 80 starts, since 2010.

—Outfielder-first baseman Efren Navarro was shipped to the Baltimore Orioles in a deal with the Los Angeles Angels for cash considerations.

The Angels designated Navarro for assignment last week before making the trade.

To create space on the 40-man roster, the Orioles designated outfielder L.J. Hoes for assignment. Hoes was acquired in November from the Houston Astros in a trade.

In 54 games for the Angels last season, the 29-year-old Navarro batted .253 with no home runs and five RBIs. He also hit .329 with two home runs and 29 RBIs in 72 games for Triple-A Salt Lake.

—The New York Mets and Lucas Duda avoided arbitration, with the first baseman getting a substantial raise.

Duda’s one-year, $6,725,000 deal means the 29-year-old will get a healthy pay hike after he earned $4.2 million last season. He hit .244 with 27 home runs and 73 RBIs in 2015.

The Mets also avoided arbitration with closer Jenrry Mejia, who was suspended for 80 games on April 11 after testing positive for Stanozolol. He then was banned for another 162 games on July 28 after a positive test for Stanozolol and Boldenone. Mejia asked for $2,595,000 and was offered $2,345,000. They settled for $2.47 million.
