San Diego State player notes for Mar 5th, 2019

Ryan Agnew – Noteworthy
The graduation of three-year starter Christian Chapman means the Aztecs will have a quarterback competition in the spring for the first time in a long time – in 2015 when Chapman competed with graduate transfer Maxwell Smith. The position was not settled in the spring four years ago and may not be this time, either. Long likes to extend position competitions to push players to improve. Senior Ryan Agnew, who started seven games last season when Chapman was sidelined with a knee injury, comes into the spring as the starter. He will be challenged by junior transfer Jordon Brookshire, sophomore Mark Salazar (Rancho Bernardo High) and redshirt freshman Carson Baker (Helix High). At this point, Agnew and Brookshire are the two top challengers. Both are duel-threat QBs who have experience with the spread dating back to high school. Agnew threw for 1,651 yards with 10 touchdowns and six interceptions last season for the Aztecs. He also rushed for nearly 300 yards before subtracting losses for sacks. Agnew’s running abilities were on display more at Carroll High in Southlake, Texas, where he passed for 6.967 yards and rushed for 2,286 yards. – San Diego Union Tribune
