Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan was fired by the New Orleans Saints on Monday.

Ryan has been embattled as the Saints struggle to get consistent stops. Head coach Sean Payton didn’t rule out coaching and personnel changes when asked after the worst loss the team has ever had under Payton Sunday at Washington.

The Biloxi Sun-Herald first reported Ryan was let go.

Payton said the Saints struggled in every area to allow 513 yards to the Redskins. The Saints are on bye this week after the 47-14 defeat.

“There wasn’t a lot that we’re going to look at on that tape that we’re not going to be disappointed in,” Payton said.

The Saints are 31st in total defense and are likely to be dead last in the league in points and yards the next time they take the field.

“We had a good week of practice, I’ll be honest with you, I paid close attention to it in the second half — I think there was a lot of frustration,” Payton said.

The fiery Ryan and Payton have exchanged words multiple times on the sideline but the good friends always seemed to come out the other side just fine entering the next game.

Among the team’s many issues is a secondary that can’t stay healthy and a pass rush failing to produce pressure.
