Padres choose Green as new manager

The San Diego Padres will announce Andy Green as their new manager later Thursday, according to published reports.

Green spent the 2015 season as third base coach of the Arizona Diamondbacks. This is will be his first stint as a major-league manager but he was a minor-league manager for four seasons.

Green, 38, was selected over former Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire and Pittsburgh Pirates third base coach Rick Sofield.

He played parts of four major-league seasons with the Diamondbacks and New York Mets. He batted .200 in 230 career at-bats.

The Padres went 74-88 last season and fired manager Bud Black after 65 games. Interim manager Pat Murphy was also let go after the season.
