Rick Carlisle, set to begin his eighth season as the Dallas Mavericks’ head coach, is closing in on a five-year contract extension with the team, ESPN’s Marc Stein reported Monday.

Carlisle is entering the final year of a four-year contract.

Only San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich and Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra have been in charge of their teams longer than Carlisle.

Last season, Dallas went 50-32, its fourth 50-plus-win season under Carlisle, who has a 338-220 record with the Mavs. In the postseason, Carlisle has a 27-26 record with Dallas, including an NBA championship in 2010-11.

Carlisle, 55, began his head coaching career in 2001-02 with the Pistons. He led Detroit to the Eastern Conference finals in his second season, then left to coach the Pacers. Indiana reached the Eastern Conference finals during the first of his four seasons on the bench.

In 13 seasons as a head coach, Carlisle owns a 619-431 regular-season record and a 57-58 postseason mark.

Carlisle was a shooting guard during his playing days, and he won an NBA championship with the Boston Celtics in 1985-86. Only 10 others captured league titles as a player and a head coach.
