*David Montgomery – Noteworthy
Humility is baked into David Montgomery. He’s confident, but unassuming. Talented, yet reluctant to talk about the hours of work he puts into his craft – his teammates and coaches took the liberty of touting his work ethic at Iowa State. That same humility he came to be known for as a collegiate star with the Cyclones was evident again Thursday in a crowded downtown room at the NFL Scouting Combine. Players come to Lucas Oil Stadium and the Indiana Convention Center to put on their best face, and make pitches to a number of NFL teams on why they would be a fit with that franchise. Montgomery, meanwhile, did the only thing he’s ever known how to do: Be himself. “I don’t really have a sales pitch,” Montgomery said. “I just want to be myself, go in there and be me. At the end of the day, that’s what they’re getting is me. I’m just going in there, being myself and being grateful and blessed for the opportunity. Making sure I’m taking in the full experience. Definitely enjoying the process.”
Other than ISU coach Matt Campbell himself, there was no bigger poster child for the one-day-at-a-time mantra than Montgomery. Even before the two met at a high school football camp and ultimately wound up in Ames together, the Cincinnati native was steeped in not taking things for granted. So now that he is on the cusp of becoming a professional football player, Montgomery hasn’t tried to change anything about his mental process. He’s been training XPE Sports in Florida, and waiting for whatever comes next. “Life has been the same for me as far as since even before I declared and to now,” Montgomery said. “Just being able to take it in a business manner and understand that this is very important to me, my life and my family. I kind of approach everything the same way and just attack it with a clear mindset knowing that if I just give my best effort, I’ll be OK.” – Ames Tribune
