Pitcher Zack Greinke will opt out of his Los Angeles Dodgers contract that has $71 million over three years remaining and test the free-agent market, CBSSports.com reported Friday.
One general manager told CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman that Greinke is likely to get multiple offers for at least $125 million over five years, and that the Greinke would likely sign for about $150 million over five years.
Greinke, who turns 32 next week, signed a $147 million, six-year deal with the Dodgers three years ago.
The Dodgers knew there was a good chance Greinke would opt out after this season, and that was before he finished this season with a 19-3 record and a league-best 1.66 ERA. Either Greinke or Jake Arrieta of the Chicago Cubs is expected to win the National League Cy Young Award.
Greinke was 1-1 in the postseason, yielding five runs (including three homers) in 13 1/3 innings. He was the losing pitcher in Game 5 of the NLDS against the New York Mets.
Greinke has not commented on whether he is likely to opt out of his current contract.
