The Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday said general manager and president of baseball operations Doug Melvin is stepping down and will transition into an advisory role with the team.

Melvin was named general manager in 2002 and took over as president of operations in 20012. At that time he signed an extension through this season.

The Brewers are 48-65 and in last place in the NL Central this season, and they last reached the postseason in 2011.

Reports out of Milwaukee say Melvin’s decision takes effect immediately. Craig Counsell is expected to remain the managers.

During Melvin’s tenure there have been five managers and the Brewers have made it to the postseason twice. The team has compiled a 1,004-1,052 record.
