Atlanta Hawks free agent forward DeMarre Carroll signed a four-year, $62 million contract with the Toronto Raptors on Thursday. Carroll, one of the top two-way players in the league, averaged a career-high 12.6 points per game with the Hawks in 2014-15 while regularly checking the opponents’ top scorer.

“We are thrilled with not only the skills but the intangibles DeMarre will bring to our team,” Raptors president and general manager Masai Ujiri said in a statement. “He is a hard-nosed player who plays with passion and commitment on both ends of the floor.”

Carroll, 6-foot-8, 215 pounds, averaged 5.3 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 31.3 minutes in 70 contests (69 starts) last season. He also posted career bests in field goal percentage (.487), three-point field goal percentage (.395), field goals made (318), three-point field goals made (120) and free throws made (127). He finished third in the NBA in steals-to-turnover ratio (1.25) and fourth in both two-point field goal percentage (.567, 198-349) and effective field goal percentage (.579).

Carroll turns 29 on July 27, and joins a solid backcourt of DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry in Toronto.

The Hawks retained their other top free agent, forward Paul Millsap, who eschewed a four-year, $80 million offer from the Orlando Magic in favor of a three-year, $59 million contract to stay in Atlanta.
