With Tampa Bay outfielder Steven Souza going on the disabled list with a lacerated finger, the team activated designated hitter John Jaso from the 60-day DL on Tuesday to fill the roster spot.

Souza was injured Sunday after he was hit by a pitch. The 26-year-old rookie, who came to the Rays during the offseason in a three-team with the San Diego Padres and Washington Nationals, is batting .210 with 108 strikeouts this year, but he has 15 homers and 33 RBIs in 79 games.

Jaso has been sidelined since the beginning of the season with a bruised left wrist. He batted .250 in eight games on a minor league rehabilitation assignment before the Rays activated him.

To clear space on the 40-man roster, the Rays designated right-hander Preston Guilmet for assignment.

The injury-plagued Rays have placed 20 players on the disabled list this season, trailing only the Texas Rangers. In the past 14 days, Tampa Bay has been forced to make 10 roster moves.
