KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Yankees have had few off days in the past month, but will have two in the next four days — Monday and Thursday.
They will be welcomed.
“We’ve played 30 games in 31 days,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said after a 6-0 loss Sunday to the Royals. “The week didn’t finish the way we wanted, but if you look at our record in that long stretch and it’s pretty good. I think this off day is really important to our guys physically. We’ve got two off days in the next four and hopefully that will help us physically.”
The Yankees were shut out for the first time this season. They have lost five of six scoring, scoring a paltry six runs in the defeats.
“We just haven’t swung the bats well,” Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira said. “It goes in ebbs and flows during the season. It was just a bad week for us.”
Could the lengthy span of games be a factor in the Yankees’ lagging offense?
“It doesn’t help, but that’s not an excuse,” Teixeira said. “We’ll enjoy the day off tomorrow and kind of regroup. But it’s not because we’ve played a long stretch of games.”
