Washington Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon is recovering from a MCL sprain that sent him to the disabled list on April 1. Now he’s several weeks from baseball activities because of a new injury.
“We’re going to have to slow progress down a little bit,” Nationals manager Matt Williams said Tuesday.
Rendon had played two games at second base last week when he felt tightness in his side and returned to Washington.
Williams said Rendon has a strained oblique and might miss multiple weeks to recover from the new injury, which can be exacerbated by taking even “dry swings,” meaning no contact with the ball. He began the season on the disabled list with the left knee issue with a projected return date of mid-May.
“There’s no timetable on it until we fully assess it,” said Williams.
The Nationals will have Rendon remain in Washington until he’s ready to resume baseball training.
Williams said relief pitcher Casey Janssen could begin a rehab assignment as soon as Thursday. Janssen pitched in a simulated game Monday.
