BOSTON — New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez hit his 660th career home run in the eighth inning of Friday night’s game against the Boston Red Sox, tying him with Willie Mays for fourth place on MLB’s all-time home run list.

Rodriguez, who entered the game as a pinch hitter with one out in a 2-2 ballgame in the top of the eighth, crushed a 94-mile per hour fastball on a 3-0 count from Red Sox right-hander Junichi Tazawa over the wall in left field. It was the first career pinch-hit home run for the Yankees third baseman.

Rodriguez was originally given the day off after entering Friday’s game hitless in his last 11 at-bats before pinch hitting for designated hitter Garrett Jones.

After his milestone blast, Rodriguez now has six home runs and 14 RBIs in 21 games this season.
