Kansas City Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar was placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list Friday after a pitch struck him in the face two days earlier.
The move is retroactive to Wednesday, when Escobar was hit on the cheek by a pitch from Cleveland’s Danny Salazar in a game against the Indians. Escobar missed Thursday’s game against the Detroit Tigers.
Results are not in yet from a concussion test on Friday, but Royals manager Ned Yost said Escobar isn’t feeling 100 precent recovered and the team chose not to take chances.
Christian Colon has taken Escobar’s place at short until he returns. Last year, Escobar played in all 162 regular-season games.
In 19 games this season, the 28-year-old Escobar was batting .291 with no homers and eight RBIs.
