The Oakland Athletics avoided arbitration with reliever Tyler Clippard, reaching agreement on a one-year contract Wednesday.
The right-hander had requested $8.85 million and the A’s offered $7.775 million during the exchange of arbitration figures in January.
Clippard, traded to the A’s from the Washington Nationals in mid-January for infielder Yunel Escobar, could start the season as a closer for the A’s while Sean Doolittle is sidelined with a rotator cuff injury.
Last season for the Nationals, Clippard appeared in 70 games and posted a 7-4 record with one save, 40 holds and a 2.18 ERA. He has a career 37-25 record with 34 saves and a 2.89 ERA for the Nationals and the New York Yankees.
The A’s now have all of their arbitration cases settled.
