The Cleveland Indians filled a vacancy on their staff left by Kevin Cash’s departure to the Tampa Bay Rays as manager last month by hiring Jason Bere as bullpen coach on Tuesday.
Bere spent the past nine years as a special assistant to the Indians’ baseball operations department since 2005.
The 43-year-old Bere retired as a pitcher after 11 years in the major leagues with the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Cubs, Indians, Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers. He had a 71-65 record with a 5.14 ERA in 211 games, and was named to the American League All-Star team in 1994.
In his role as a special assistant for the Indians, he was responsible for player development and instruction and evaluation of pitchers.
