After nine seasons with the Tennessee Titans, kicker Rob Bironas was released by the team on Wednesday.

Bironas is the second leading scorer in Oilers/Titans franchise history with 1,032 points, ranking behind only Al Del Greco, and his 85.7 career field goal percentage ranks fourth in NFL history.

The 36-year-old Bironas was due a base salary of $2.875 million in 2014.

A former Pro Bowl selection, Bironas converted 25 of 29 field goal attempts in 2013. But a career-low 61.1-yard average on kickoffs concerned the team, The Tennesseean reported.

“We want to thank Rob for his nine years of service to the Titans,” Titans general manager Ruston Webster said. “He has been an outstanding kicker and we appreciate him both for his contributions on the field and in our community.”

A possible replacement for Bironas is 25-year-old Maikon Bonani, who was with the Titans in training camp last year.

The Titans also announced on Wednesday that they agreed to terms with wide receiver and return specialist Marc Mariani on a one-year contract.

“I am truly excited and thankful to say that I will be back in TwoTone Blue next year in TitanNation! Can’t wait to get back and get started,” Mariani wrote on Twitter.

Mariani spent the last two years on injured reserve with a broken leg in 2012 and a shoulder injury in 2013. He played in 32 games during his first two seasons in the NFL with the Titans.

Mariani earned Pro Bowl honors as a kick returner as a rookie in 2010. For his career, he has scored three return touchdowns, registered an 11.2-yard punt return average and a 24.8-yard kickoff average.

Mariani originally joined the Titans as a seventh-round draft choice in 2010 from the University of Montana.
