St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher said he is interested in former New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez.

“I’d say that there is interest,” Fisher said at the NFL owner’s meetings Sunday in Orlando, Fla. “I can’t say how much. But there certainly would be interest. I don’t have a backup with experience on the roster right now.”

The Jets released Sanchez last week.

Sanchez was selected by the Jets with the fifth overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft and started 62 games in five years, posting a 33-29 record and passing for 68 touchdowns with 69 interceptions.

Releasing Sanchez, who was due a $2 million bonus on March 25, saved the Jets $8.3 million against the salary cap.

Sanchez lost the starting job to Geno Smith, a rookie last season, when he suffered a shoulder injury in the Jets’ third preseason game against the New York Giants. He sat out the 2013 season after undergoing shoulder surgery and also an arthroscopic procedure on his left knee.

Rams starter Sam Bradford torn an ACL in October. Backup Kellen Clemens started in Bradford’s place last season but he left for the San Diego Chargers as a free agent earlier this month. The Rams also have Austin Davis, who lacks experience.

Sanchez has a history with Rams offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who was the Jets’ coordinator during Sanchez’s first two NFL seasons.

“Brian had a good relationship with Mark,” Fisher said. “He’s just learning. He’s been to the AFC Championship game a couple of times, so he’s been there.”

Like Sanchez, Fisher also played collegiately at USC.
