49ers’ Culliver arrested

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver is facing felony charges after allegedly fleeing the scene of a hit-and-run accident with a bicycle on Friday morning.

According to KTVU-TV in San Jose, Calif., Culliver was arrested on felony counts of hit-and-run for striking a bicyclist and for possessing illegal brass knuckles and also a misdemeanor charge of hit-and-run for striking a witness’ vehicle. He was booked into Santa Clara County jail.

A witness followed Culliver after the accident with the bicycle. When the witness tried to block Culliver’s vehicle, police said Culliver emerged from behind the wheel and threatened the witness with the brass knuckles before taking off, striking the witness’ car. Police then arrived to apprehend Culliver.

According to the report, the bicyclist sustained minor injuries and was released after treatment.

“The 49ers organization is aware of the recent matter involving Chris Culliver,” the 49ers said in a statement on Friday night issued tto KTVU. “We will remain in contact with Chris and the local authorities as we continue to gather the facts regarding this situation. As this is an ongoing legal matter, we will reserve further comment at this time.”

Culliver left the jail around 5:15 p.m. PT with a woman and was picked up by a van, according to KTVU. He is scheduled to appear in Santa Clara County Superior Court on April 11.

During Super Bowl week in 2013, Culliver garnered attention when his anti-gay comments created controversy. He later apologized for the remark and underwent sensitivity counseling.
