Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly spoke with DeSean Jackson several days ago about persistent trade rumors but indicated to the media on Wednesday that acknowledged that the wide receiver’s future with the team remains up in the air.
“I like DeSean. DeSean did a really nice job for us,” Kelly said. “But we’re always going to do what’s best for the organization.”
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport also reported Wednesday that the Eagles have made it known that Pro Bowl guard Evan Mathis is available via trade, per a source informed of the situation.
Rapoport added that Mathis has been placed on the trade block because of his high salary of $5.15 million due in 2014. The 32-year-old is seeking a new deal after a stellar 2013 campaign.
As far as Jackson, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that he told some teammates after his discussion with Kelly that he would be staying with the Eagles. But Kelly did not seem to indicate to reporters that Jackson’s status was secure.
Jackson posted career highs in catches with 82 and receiving yards with 1,332 yards and had nine touchdowns last season. By there were rumblings that Kelly did not think Jackson was a good fit.
Kelly appeared to be trying to dispel the notion of any conflict in his conversation with the media, saying there were no issues with Jackson last season.
“We’ve had a good conversation and we’re always going to do what’s best for the football team,” Kelly said. “But I think he knows where we are, and I know where he is. I feel very comfortable about it. My conversations with him aren’t things I think I need to have a conversation with anyone else about.”
Jackson’s base salary is $10.5 million in 2014 and Kelly said Jackson has not approached the team about an enhanced deal.
“DeSean never came to me or came to anybody and said I want a new contract,” Kelly said. “He talked to reporters, but he never came to us and said I want a new contract.”
If the Eagles decide to move Jackson, Kelly does not seem concerned about replacing the team’s top receiver.
“I don’t think our offense has ever been predicated on one player,” Kelly said. “We used three quarterbacks last year. We used multiple running backs. Our tight ends are integral to what we do. I think we have an outstanding offensive line. It’s never been about just one guy.
“It’s why I think we have diversity. I mean, we were first in rushing and I think ninth in passing. I think there is balance in terms of how we do things. You want great players at every position and I think that’s what we’re always striving for in terms of where we can put people into position. It’s never been predicated on just one guy, because if it is, if he’s out for a water break or hurt for an extended period of time, then you’re going to be in trouble.”
