The Philadelphia Eagles announced via Twitter on Friday that they released wide receiver DeSean Jackson.

“After careful consideration this offseason, Eagles decide to part ways with DeSean Jackson. The team informed him of his release today,” the tweet read.

Jackson’s surprising release comes two years after he signed a five-year contract extension. He was due $10.5 million this year and $30.5 million over the rest of the deal, but none of it was guaranteed.

The team had reportedly been trying to trade him.

Jackson, 27, had 82 catches for 1,332 yards with nine touchdowns last season.
