The Philadelphia Eagles are being cautious with injury-plagued Sam Bradford, but quarterbacks coach Ryan Day says the “sky’s the limit” for the veteran signal-caller.
Bradford, acquired in an offseason trade for Nick Foles from the St. Louis Rams, still has not completely recovered from the second ACL tear. He did not participate in any 11-on-11 work in the Eagles’ spring camps. But the 27-year-old Bradford is confident he will be ready to go for the start of training camp.
The Eagles named Day, 36, as quarterbacks coach in January to replace Bill Musgrave, who became the offensive coordinator of the Oakland Raiders.
The Eagles’ quarterback picture — which now includes Bradford, Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow and Matt Barkley — has been altered since Day was first hired. He found out about the Bradford acquisition in March through head coach Chip Kelly, who called him to deliver the news.
“You’re excited because you know that this is a guy that is really, really talented,” Day told Birds 24/7. “What a great opportunity him coming here into this offense, coming off a couple injuries to come in and have a breakout year. Just being able to be a part of it and try to help him get better every day, it’s an exciting opportunity.”
Day said Bradford hasn’t gotten a chance to show off his full skill set as a pro because he has been hurt so often.
“I think it really has been (injury),” Day said. “When you’ve had the season-ending injuries he’s had, it’s hard to kinda put the foot on the pedal and roll. So I think sky’s the limit for him that way.”
St. Louis drafted Bradford out of Oklahoma in 2010. Bradford has started just seven games in the past two years. For his five-year career, Bradford sports an 18-30-1 record.
