The Houston Texans released three running backs, including Andre Brown, who was expected to be Arian Foster’s backup this season, the Houston Chronicle reported Monday.

The Texans also released Dennis Johnson and Tim Cornett.

Brown signed a one-year, $645,000 contract with the Texans in the offseason, after rushing for more than 100 yards twice last season for the New York Giants.
However, he did not play at all in Saturday’s 32-0 preseason loss to Arizona even though he was healthy.

Jonathan Grimes and rookie Alfred Blue both passed Brown on the depth chart recently.

Foster missed practice again on Monday, and Grimes was the team’s primary back during that practice.

However, the Texans signed running backs Ronnie Brown and William Powell, so they figure to compete for playing time as well.
