Seeking reinforcements for their secondary, the Detroit Lions are considering a deal for 12-time Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey.

Bailey, 36, was released on Saturday by the New Orleans Saints, who signed Bailey to a two-year deal in April. DetroitLions.com reported Thursday that Bailey was in town for a workout with the team that once drafted his younger brother, linebacker Boss Bailey.

But a foot injury hampered Bailey throughout the preseason, and the Saints decided to release him despite a $500,000 guarantee in his contract.

Bailey was released by Denver in March after 10 seasons with the Broncos and was injured most of last season.

He was drafted in the first round by Washington, where he played for five seasons before being traded to Denver in 2004.

His 52 career interceptions rank third among active players (Ed Reed has 64 and Charles Woodson has 56) and tied for 26th in NFL history.
