Offensive guard John Moffitt, who abruptly retired from the NFL in 2013 at age 27, is planning to make a comeback after battling drug issues.

FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer said Wednesday that the now 28-year-old Moffitt, who has been training with him, has decided to unretire.

“I have never been so proud of a guy I’ve trained than I am of John Moffitt,” Glazer wrote on Twitter. “Retired two years ago (because) he knew he had drug issues, took time to go to rehab, clean up his life, beat his demons and he has taken his life back! Guy inspires us every day. He came to me three months ago (at Glazer’s gym Unbreakable) to train to take his career back. He’s become the favorite of every player in our gym. He officially un-retired today. Free agent starting guard. So proud of him to get here.”

When Moffitt retired in November 2013, he said was “ready to live a different kind of life.”

Glazer said that the Denver Broncos, who still own his rights, will release Moffitt. The player will be subject to the waiver process because Moffitt had fewer than four years of service when he retired. If unclaimed, he will become a free agent.

After his retirement, Moffitt said he had lost his love for the game and was tired of risking his health.

“I offered a service, and I no longer wanted to offer the service and I no longer request money for it,” Moffitt told ESPN shortly after his retirement. “You can change a passion. You can change a dream. I had the NFL dream, and it was no longer what I envisioned. I don’t expect people to understand.”

In March 2014, Moffitt was charged with assault and possession of marijuana, cocaine and ecstasy while at a Chicago nightclub. Prior to that, Moffitt pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct after being twice accused of urinating in public and once accused of criminal trespass.

“Amazing how this guy took his life back. He’s taught us in the gym a bunch about beating your demons,” Glazer tweeted about Moffitt’s recovery.
