Dallas Cowboys safety Jakar Hamilton was suspended four games for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, ESPN reported.

Hamilton was recently singled out by head coach Jason Garrett for showing improvement and maturity. Hamilton sat out early in August with a concussion and did not play in last week’s preseason game because of a hamstring injury but was in the running for a spot on the 53-man roster.

Hamilton, 23, entered the NFL in 2013 with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent from South Carolina State. He spent the first two months of the season on the practice squad before a promotion to the active roster when J.J. Wilcox was injured Oct. 26.

Hamilton is the younger brother of Mike Goodson, the former New York Jets running back who was released in June because of off-field issues.
