Green Bay Packers tight end Andrew Quarless was arrested Saturday after firing a gun following an altercation in Miami Beach, Fla.
Miami Beach police said Quarless, 26, and another man got into a verbal altercation when they approached a car filled with several women.
Quarless exited his black Porsche Panamera and approached the women’s vehicle after they left a nearby parking garage, according to the police report.
“It progressively became hostile,” Miami Beach officer Michael Garcia wrote in the report, according to the Miami Herald.
According to report, the conversation escalated, leading Quarless to fire his semi-automatic handgun into the air twice.
The Miami New Times reported the Independence Day incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. and Quarless was charged with discharging a firearm in public.
Quarless left in the Porsche he was riding in, but he was apprehended by officers after he allegedly tried to hide outside a restaurant and tried to stash his gun in a potted plant, according to Miami Beach police.
Discharging a firearm is a misdemeanor charge in Florida. Under the NFL’s personal-conduct policy, Quarless could be put on paid leave until the league completes its own investigation of the incident.
“We are aware of the matter involving Andrew Quarless and are in the process of gathering more information. We will withhold further comment,” the Packers said in a statement Saturday.
Quarless, entering his sixth season with the Packers, was a fifth-round draft pick out of Penn State in 2010. He caught 29 passes for a career-high 323 yards and three touchdowns in 16 games (11 starts) last season. In five seasons with the Packers, he has 85 receptions for 909 yards and six touchdowns.
—Minnesota Vikings cornerback Josh Robinson has a partially torn pectoral muscle as the team heads into training camp later this month.
According to ESPN.com, Robinson suffered the pectoral injury before the Vikings’ minicamp in June.
Robinson, who mostly worked in the team’s nickel package last season, was expected to battle Terence Newman, Captain Munnerlyn and first-round pick Trae Waynes for playing time at cornerback this season.
Robinson, a third-round pick in the 2012 draft, is scheduled to make $1.552 million this season.
Robinson was in the news a week ago when he issued an apology for his comments that were critical of the Supreme Court’s decision legalizing same-sex marriage.
In three seasons with the Vikings, Robinson has 154 tackles and five interceptions in 42 games.
—The Philadelphia Eagles are being cautious with injury-plagued Sam Bradford, but quarterbacks coach Ryan Day says the “sky’s the limit” for the veteran signal-caller.
Bradford, acquired in an offseason trade for Nick Foles from the St. Louis Rams, still has not completely recovered from the second ACL tear. He did not participate in any 11-on-11 work in the Eagles’ spring camps. But the 27-year-old Bradford is confident he will be ready to go for the start of training camp.
The Eagles named Day, 36, as quarterbacks coach in January to replace Bill Musgrave, who became the offensive coordinator of the Oakland Raiders.
The Eagles’ quarterback picture — which now includes Bradford, Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow and Matt Barkley — has been altered since Day was first hired. He found out about the Bradford acquisition in March through head coach Chip Kelly, who called him to deliver the news.
“You’re excited because you know that this is a guy that is really, really talented,” Day told Birds 24/7. “What a great opportunity him coming here into this offense, coming off a couple injuries to come in and have a breakout year. Just being able to be a part of it and try to help him get better every day, it’s an exciting opportunity.”
St. Louis drafted Bradford out of Oklahoma in 2010. Bradford has started just seven games in the past two years. For his five-year career, Bradford sports an 18-30-1 record.
