New York Knicks center Tyson Chandler left Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Long Island Wednesday night on crutches after suffering an apparent sprained knee, according to a report on NBCSports.com’s Pro Basketball Talk.
Citing a tweet from the New York Daily News’ Frank Isola, Chandler’s knee will undergo an MRI on Thursday to determine the severity and extent of the injury.
According to reports, early in the game Chandler banged knees with the New Jersey Nets’ Gerald Wallace and fell to the court. Chandler was helped to the locker room and did not return to the game. Team officials cited the reason as a “sore knee.” A tweet by Mark Berman of the New York Post said Knicks sources told him that the injury was not believed to be serious.
The Knicks, who are already short Chandler’s backup, Marcus Camby, who is also out with an injury, open the regular season on Nov. 1 against the host Nets in their new home in Brooklyn, N.Y. If Chandler is out for any appreciable amount of time, Rasheed Wallace could potentially take his place, but he’s not quite ready or in shape for prolonged minutes just yet.
