Cavs hire Drew as assistant

New Cleveland Cavaliers coach David Blatt added NBA head coaching experience to his staff.

The Cavs announced Tuesday that former Milwaukee Bucks coach Larry Drew will join Jim Boylan, Bret Brielmaier, James Posey and Tyronn Lue on the bench. Lue earlier was named the associate head coach.

Drew was let go after one season in Milwaukee when Jason Kidd left the Brooklyn Nets for the Bucks. Milwaukee posted a 15-67 record under Drew in 2013-14.

Drew also was head coach of the Atlanta Hawks for three seasons before going to Milwaukee. The Hawks reached the playoffs in each of Drew’s three years on the bench.

Phil Handy will serve as the Cavs’ director of player development and assistant coach, and Vitaly Potapenko will be an assistant director of player development.

Boylan was with the Cavs as an assistant coach last season.
