Chicago Bulls guard Jimmy Butler could miss the start of the regular season next week after injuring his left thumb on Sunday night during an exhibition game against the Charlotte Hornets.

The Bulls announced Tuesday on Twitter that Butler suffered sprained thumb ligaments. He will not practice for the rest of the week and miss the team’s final preseason game against the Minnesota Timberwolves before the thumb is re-evaluated.

Butler wore a splint on the thumb Monday night while working out before a preseason game against the Cleveland Cavaliers in Columbus, Ohio.

The Bulls begin the regular season on Oct. 29 against the New York Knicks and face the Cavaliers two nights later.

If Butler is unable to play, veteran guard Kirk Hinrich is expected to start in his place.
