The Charlotte Hornets announced the contract extension of guard Kemba Walker on Thursday.

“Today is a great day for the Charlotte Hornets,” general manager Rich Cho said. “To be able to retain such an important piece of the core we are building here in Charlotte is exciting. Kemba is an integral part of the culture we’re trying to create within our organization and we are excited that he will continue to be a part of our team for years to come.”

The announcement comes the day after Walker scored 26 points, including the tying 3-pointer in regulation and the winning basket in overtime, as the Hornets beat the Milwaukee Bucks 108-106 in the Charlotte franchise’s first game back as the Hornets.

“It’s rewarding to continue my career with the team that drafted me,” said Walker, who was drafted ninth overall in 2011. “Since my first day in Charlotte, I knew that this was where I wanted to be. I am excited about the direction in which this franchise is headed and I’m confident that we will only get better. I’m grateful for the opportunity to represent this organization, our fans and this city moving forward.”

As reported earlier in the week, the deal is for four years and $48 million.

The new deal will start with the 2015-16 season.

If the sides had not reached an agreement by Friday, Walker would have become a free agent next summer.

All 2011 first-round selections faced the same deadline. Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving, Denver Nuggets power forward Kenneth Faried, Orlando Magic center Nikola Vucevic and Phoenix Suns power forwards Markieff Morris and Marcus Morris already agreed to new deals.

Others eligible for extensions by Friday include Orlando forward Tobias Harris, San Antonio Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard, Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson and Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio.
