Ace right-hander Max Scherzer is close to signing with the Washington Nationals, according to The Washington Post.
Nationals beat writer Adam Kilgore tweeted Sunday, “Per a source, Max Scherzer to the Nats is “very close.” Not finished yet.”
Multiple sources are reporting that other teams are still in the running for the 30-year-old Scherzer, who was 18-5 with a 3.15 ERA and 252 strikeouts in 220 1/3 innings for the Detroit Tigers last season after winning the 2013 American League Cy Young.
For his career, Scherzer is 91-50 with a 3.58 ERA in two seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks and the last five with the Tigers. He made the All-Star team in each of the past two seasons.
Scherzer rejected a six-year, $144 million offer from the Tigers last spring and is reportedly set to sign on for seven years within days.
