The Washington Nationals agreed to terms with utility player Kevin Frandsen on a one-year, $1 million deal on Friday, avoiding salary arbitration.

Frandsen will get a slight raise from last year in the deal that includes $300,000 in incentives based on plate appearances.

Frandsen, 32, hit .259 with a team-leading 11 pinch hits for the Nationals this season. He appeared in 105 games with time at third base, second base, left field and first base. He started 42 of those games, filling in wherever needed when the Nationals were struck by injuries.

Frandsen is a career .259 hitter with 57 doubles, five triples, 15 home runs and 110 RBIs in 507 major league games spanning eight seasons with the Nationals, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Angels and San Francisco Giants.

The Nationals also released left-handed starter Matt Purke. He underwent shoulder surgery in 2012 and then Tommy John surgery this season.
