Right-hander Casey Janssen, signed by the Washington Nationals during the offseason to be their primary setup man, was activated on Friday after missing the first 41 games with a shoulder problem.

The Nationals cleared space on the roster for Janssen by putting left-hander Sammy Solis on the 15-day disabled list with left shoulder inflammation.

Right shoulder inflammation kept Janssen from joining the Nationals during the first six weeks of the season. He made six appearances during a rehab assignment with Class A Potomac and Double-A Harrisburg before the Nationals deemed him ready to return to the major leagues.

In February, the 33-year-old signed a $5 million contract to be the primary replacement for setup man Tyler Clippard, who left after last season for the Oakland Athletics.

Janssen logged 90 saves during his eight seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays. Last year, he went 3-3 with an 3.94 ERA.

Solis pitched in five games for the Nationals and was 1-0 with a 5.00 ERA.
