The Toronto Blue Jays signed free agent first baseman Justin Smoak to a one-year contract worth $1 million on Wednesday.
Smoak batted .202 with seven homers and 30 RBIs in 80 games with the Seattle Mariners last season before Toronto claimed him off waivers on Oct. 28.
The Jays declined his $3.65 million option on Nov. 1 and failed to make him a qualifying offer Tuesday, making him a free agent.
Also Wednesday, the Blue Jays signed outfielder Ezequiel Carrera to a minor league contract and reportedly traded left-handed pitcher J.A. Happ to Seattle for outfielder Michael Saunders.
