The St. Louis Cardinals placed right-hander Matt Belisle on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 26 with right elbow inflammation, the team announced Tuesday before its series-opening game against the Chicago White Sox.

To replace Belisle on the roster, the Cardinals purchased the contract of right-handed reliever Marcus Hatley from Triple-A Memphis. St. Louis also moved reliever Jordan Walden from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list to clear space for Hatley on its 40-man roster.

The 35-year-old Belisle has posted a 1-1 record with a 3.00 ERA in 30 games this season. He has 12 holds and 24 strikeouts and has given up just one home run in 30 innings.

Hatley, 27, has yet to pitch in the major leagues. He signed as a free agent with the Cardinals in November after the Chicago Cubs drafted him in the 39th round in 2006 and he spent eight seasons in their organization.

In 27 games for the Memphis this year, the 6-foot-5 Hatley has a 4-2 record with a 1.69 ERA and three saves in 27 games. In May, he went 2-0 with a 0.55 ERA in 16 1/3 innings covering 11 appearances.
